5 Streaming Services We’re Watching
Our Favorites for Winter 2019
Small Planet works with a lot of content creators and providers, so we’re always taking note of new media offerings, solid user experiences, and unique ways streaming content is packaged and priced.
Whether they’re strictly over-the-top, or they’re tied to a cable package, these are some of our favorite platforms this winter for watching cartoons, catfights, and competition (often mixed together).
VRV
We just started using VRV, which bundles a number of streaming services such as Crunchyroll, Geek & Sundry, Nerdist, Rooster Teeth, Boomerang, and more into one package. It’s a nice hub for anime, cartoon, and gaming content, and the premium no-ads version is $9.99/month. Available on iOS, Android, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Xbox One, PS4, Chromecast, Roku.
Outside TV
We admit there’s some vicarious living through a lot of the programming (“Maldives Surf Day” anyone?). But several of the shows inspire us to get out and explore, and the rotation of short films is great. Available on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast.
Bravo Now
Much of Bravo’s content is available on Hulu, but current seasons of The Real Housewives, Top Chef, or new scripted shows like Dirty John are not. Timely viewing is often essential for fans of shows like Vanderpump Rules and Southern Charm, which makes the Bravo TV app essential too. Available for iOS, Android, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV.
NBA League Pass
Speaking of essential, League Pass is the definition of it for basketball fans. The annual pricing plans are very reasonable, considering the sheer amount of content you get: live game viewing for every team all season, full game replays, audio broadcasts, a VR component, plus the Premium version’s in-arena stream (which means no commercials during breaks). Available on, um, everything.
DC Universe
DC Universe made a big splash with the live-action Titans in 2018, and it’s positioning itself as a one-stop shop for DC-related movies, TV shows, comics, and news. The animated section is quite good (including new stuff like Young Justice and classics like Batman Beyond) and there’s a lot on the 2019 series slate, including Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, and Harley Quinn.
