True crime junkies, science geeks, food and/or comedy lovers, it is time to rejoice! The Small Planet summer podcast list is here!

This is some high-quality education and entertainment for your road trips, beach excursions and summer Fridays. Some are brand new, some you’ve heard of, but this is what we’ve been listening to recently.

How To Be Amazing

Hands down, Michael Ian Black is the most thoughtful interviewer working today, in any medium. He engages an eclectic, surprising guest roster (i.e. not all actors pushing a movie) with well-informed questions that don’t feel forced. Over the years Black’s self-aware snark has been a defining trait of his comedy, but in How To Be Amazing he gets out of the way of his subjects, showing genuine curiosity and respect for his guests.

Dirty John

If you’re a fan of Serial or other true crime podcasts, this one’s for you. Dirty John tells the story of Deborah Newell and John Meehan’s relationship: a compelling yet chilling tale of love, deception, and survival.

Spooked

Look no further for excitement and danger. These are the adult versions of the ghost stories your camp counselors told you. Spooked features new narrators each episode, explaining their very own experiences of supernatural events. It’s thrilling, it’s spooky, and it’s all way too real.

Nancy

Best friends Kathy Tu and Tobin Low host a witty, honest, and relatable podcast for the queer community. They discuss everything from emotional coming-out stories, to Gay Republicans, to “The Coolest Lesbian Ever,” Lena Waithe. What’s not to love?

2 Dope Queens

Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams host a live comedy show in Brooklyn, where they invite comedians to come and talk about different issues: they cover topics like race, gender, sex, and their lives in general. Not only does it foster a diverse and inclusive platform for comedians, but it’s a hilarious show that tells interesting and relevant stories.

My Favorite Murder

It takes special women to make you laugh at utter tragedy, but these ladies will have you questioning your humanity in no time. This podcast is full of intriguing murder stories and plenty of tips on how to stay sexy and not get murdered.

Doughboys

Two UCB improvisers go to fast food restaurants and make fun of each other. And they have great guests like Jason Manzoukas, Gillian Jacobs, and Paul Scheer.

Binge Mode

Two editors from The Ringer talk through TV shows, movies, and books. If you’re looking to re-live Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, this is the place to do it.

In the Dark

A must for true crime listeners, Peabody Award-winning In the Dark is a deeply compelling look at the injustices baked into the justice system. The first season centered on the unsolved murder of an eleven-year-old boy Minnesota whose abduction helped fuel the creation of national sex-offender registries. The current season focuses on a Mississippi man who’s been tried for the same murder six times. Find out more in this recent New Yorker article.

Getting Curious

Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness’ surprisingly academic podcast delves into all the things Jonathan is curious about, including Middle East politics, Brexit, Bees, the Bail System, and determining who was the Beyoncé of Renaissance Art.

S-Town

S-Town is an absolute winner — if you haven’t listened to it already, you’re in for a treat. Host Brian Reed hits a gold mine of complex, intense, and intriguing information. He walks us through his investigations in a small town in rural Alabama, bringing us along through the twists and turns of one curious crime, and the man who came to him with the story.

Bad Science

Like many nerds, we have a habit of questioning the scientific validity of things we see in film and television. Constantly. Bad Science provides a safe space for our long-standing suspicions about cloud cities, shrinking tech, Jurassic insects trapped in amber, and other important, completely irrelevant, topics.
