1. NYC’s Clear, a biometrics startup known for its airport screening application, has raised $100 million in a funding round. Investors included Enlightened Hospitality Investments, The Partnership Fund for New York City, 32 Equity (the venture capital arm of the NFL) and Liberty Media. Numerous sports teams have partnered with Clear to use its Health Pass product including the New York Mets, Detroit Tigers, Orlando Magic, Arizona Coyotes and Seattle Seahawks. 2. Brooklyn’s Getaway, a vacation cabin rental platform, has raised $41.7 million in a Series C funding. The round was led by travel and hospitality-focused firm Certares. The company rents tiny cabins in rustic locations within a two-hour drive of major cities like Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles and New York, Getaway appeared on Shark Tank in 2017 and turned down an offer from Chris Sacca. 3. NYC’s Payoneer, an online payment startup, is going public via merger with FTAC Olympus Acquisition, a SPAC. The deal values Payoneer at $3.3 billion and gives the company access to the more than $750 million raised by FTAC. Payoneer handles international payments for companies such as Google and Airbnb. 4. NYC’s Primary Venture Partners has published its Q4 2020 NYC Seed Deal Report. While deal count increased only 1.5% over Q3, total dollars raised increased 22% from Q3 2020, resulting in a 20% increase in average round size (a record-breaking $2.9MM). Primary Venture Partners is an NYC-centric venture capital firm which focuses on seed capital investments. Read the report here. (www.primary.vc)
5. Brooklyn’s Ethena, a provider of sexual harassment prevention and corporate compliance training, has raised $2 million in a follow-on funding. GSV Ventures led the round. Ethena is providing monthly training to 20,000 employees at companies such as Netflix, Zoom and Zendesk. (www.goethena.com) (TechCrunch)

6. NYC’s Jackpocket, an app for buying lottery tickets, has raised $50 million in a Series C financing. Investors included Raine Group, Greenspring Associates, Circle K Ventures, TEGNA Ventures, BRV Capital, Gaingels, David Blitzer, the owner of the NJ Devils & 76ers, actor Sean Hayes, and Jon Ledecky, the owner of the NY Islanders. Jackpocket has regulatory approval to sell lottery tickets in New York and New Jersey and last month, accounted for 7% of all Powerball tickets sold in New York. (www.jackpocket.com) (PR Newswire)
7. NYC’s WeWork is in discussions to go public through a merger with a SPAC (special purpose acquisition company). The deal is rumored to value WeWork at around $10 billion, a sharp decrease from the company’s $47 billion valuation in 2019. A number of NYC tech companies have recently gone public via a SPAC merger including Wheels Up, Taboola, Latch and Payoneer. (www.wework.com) (The Real Deal).
8. NYC’s Alma, a membership-based network for mental health care providers, has raised $28 million in a Series B funding. Insight Partners led the round and was joined by NYC’s Tusk Venture Partners, NYC’s Primary Venture Partners, NYC’s BoxGroup, Optum Ventures, Sound Ventures and Rainfall Ventures. Alma’s platform enables providers to accept insurance and also includes features such as a client-matching service, scheduling and billing functions, and a community for support. 9. Brooklyn’s Dame Products, a sex tech company, has raised $4 million in a seed funding round. Listen led the round and was joined by Chingona Ventures, The Community Fund, Her Capital, HP Reformation Ventures, IgniteXL Ventures and Joyance Partners. The company sells its products both direct-to-consumers, through online retailers such as Goop, Revolve, Free People, Cult Beauty, and now, at Nordstrom as well.
