1. NYC’s Headway, a therapist search platform, has raised $70 million in a Series B funding at a $750 million valuation. Andreessen Horowitz led the round with NYC’s Thrive Capital, GV (Google Ventures) and Accel also participating. Headway’s platform lets users find therapists, check their insurance benefits and file for reimbursement online. (www.headway.co) (TechCrunch)
2. Brooklyn’s Scroll, an ad-blocking news reader, has been acquired by Twitter.The terms of the deal were no disclosed. Scroll had previously raised a total of $10 million from investors including The New York Times, Samsung NEXT, Founder Collective, Bertelsmann, Oreilly AlphaTech Ventures, NYC’s Union Square Ventures, Uncork Capital and Gannett. 3. NYC’s Atlast Food, creator of vegan bacon, has raised $40 million in a Series A funding. The round was led by Viking Global Investors with participation from 40 North, AiiM Partners, Senator Investment Group, Stray Dog Capital, Footprint Coalition, Applegate, Stonyfield and Whole Foods. Atlast’s MyBacon is a “whole cut” vegan meat that offers the same sear, sizzle, chew and fattiness of bacon. (www.atlastfood.co) (The Spoon)
4. Cedarhurst’s Swimply, an “Airbnb for swimming pools”, has raised $10 million in a Series A funding. Norwest Venture Partners led the round and was joined by investors including Trust Ventures. In March 2020, Swimply appeared on Shark Tank but did not secure a deal. (www.swimply.com) (TechCrunch)
5. NYC’s untapt, an AI platform for talent acquisition and recruitment, has been acquired by Wynden Stark, a London-based staffing firm. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Untapt had previously raised a total of $7.9 million from investors including WorldQuant Ventures LLC, Tsai Capital Corporation, SenaHill Partners, Sand Hill East and Bluff Point Associates. 6. NYC’s Tidal, a streaming music service founded by Jay-Z, is being sold to Square. Square will pay $297 million in stock and cash for a “substantial majority” of Tidal. Jay-Z will join Square’s board. (www.tidal.com) (www.squareup.com) (New York Times)
7. NYC’s Primary Venture Partners Q1 2021 NYC Seed Deal Report finds that “New York City Startups Get Roaring Start in 2021”. Deal volume was up by more than 18 percent over Q1 2020, total funding was up by over 16 percent, and most seed rounds were between $2.5 and $6 million. Read the report here. (www.primary.vc)
8. NYC’s Food52, a recipe and cookware startup, has acquired venerable housewares brand Dansk from Lenox Corporation. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Food52 intends on revitalizing Dansk which is best known for its Scandinavian design elements. (www.food52.com) (Retail Dive )
9. NYC’s Vivrelle, a membership club for shared designer handbags, has raised $26 million in a Series A funding. Origin Ventures led the round and was joined by Chapford Capital Group. 10. NYC’s Actuate, a developer of automation and intelligence software for security cameras, has raised $8 million in a Series A funding. NYC’s Tribeca Venture Partners led the round and was joined by Scribble Ventures, OCA Ventures, Context Ventures, Bling Capital, Upside Partnership and Tensility Venture Partners. Actuate adds an AI-based layer to existing security cameras which identifies potential threats. (www.actuate.ai) (BusinessWire)
11. Brooklyn’s PowerX, a smart home energy use platform, has raised $4 million in a seed funding round. Investors included SpringTide Capital, Antler Global, Y Combinator and senior executives from Tesla and SpaceX. PowerX’s multi-sensor suite leverages AI to optimize a home’s use of electricity and gas to automatically lower energy costs and carbon output. (www.powerx.co) (PR Newswire)
