1. NYC’s Branded, an acquirer of Amazon sellers and brands, has raised $150 million in a venture funding round. Investors included Vine Ventures, Lurra Capital, Kima Venture, Regah Ventures, NYC’s Tiger Global Management, Declaration Partners, Kreos Capital and Zynga founder Mark Pincus. Since its inception in the second half of 2020, Branded has acquired 20 Amazon marketplace brands generating $150 million in gross revenue. Branded is one of the many French startups in NYC. 2. NYC’s RapidSOS, an emergency technology start-up, has raised $85 million in a Series C funding round. The investors were NYC’s Insight Partners and Global Venture Capital. The company’s products increase the funnel of information transmitted to emergency services alongside a 911 call and provided data to assist in addressing 150 million emergencies in 2020. 3. NYC’s Win Brands Group, an acquirer of e-commerce brands, has raised $50 million in a venture funding round. Investors included Assembled Brands and Oaktree Capital Management. The company is focused on acquiring online brands selling through the Shopify platform. (www.winbg.com) (PR Newswire)
4. NYC’s Careful, a platform that helps manage and monitor the finances of aging relatives, has raised $3.2 million in a seed funding round. NextView Ventures and Bessemer Venture Partners led the round which also included angel investors like Adam Nash (former CEO of Wealthfront). 5. NYC’s Insight Partners has released its “The ScaleUp Revolution: A Force Multiplier of Economic Growth” report. A “ScaleUp” is defined as a startup that has reached $10 million in revenue by its fifth year .The Report addresses strategies for success and the role of investment partners. 6. NYC’s Zocdoc, a digital healthcare scheduling platform, has raised $150 million in a growth funding round. Francisco Partners led the round. During the pandemic, Zocdoc pivoted from being a scheduling app to providing telehealth appointments with over 10,000 physicians. (www.zocdoc.com) (MedCity News)
7. NYC health insurance startup Oscar has filed for a $100 million initial public offering. Oscar logged $1.67 billion in revenue during 2020 and $1.04 billion in 2019. The company will list on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol OSCR. (www.hioscar.com) (MobiHealthNews)
8. NYC-based venture capital firm Thrive Capital has raised $2 billion for a new fund, its seventh. The fund will devote $500 million to early stage companies and $1.5 billion to late stage companies. (www.thrivecap.com) (Pitchbook)
9. NYC’s Base, an at-home lab testing startup, has raised $3.4 million in a seed funding. NYC’s Female Founders Fund led the round and was joined by TheVentureCity, Brooklyn Bridge Ventures, AmplifyHer Ventures, Lakehouse Ventures and 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki. Base offers at-home testing on a subscription basis focusing on overall health by tailored lifestyle recommendations. (www.get-base.com) (Forbes)
10. The New York Times reports on Turbovax, a vaccine finder website set up by an NYC-based programmer. The developer, Huge Ma, grew frustrated while trying to make a coronavirus vaccine appointment for his mother in early January, and developed the meta-search site in two weeks at a total cost of $50.
