1. Three of Better.com’s top executives resigned as part of the backlash after CEO Vishal Garg laid off 900 employees in a mass Zoom call. The company’s head of marketing, head of public relations and vice president of communications all quit in protest. 2. NYC is implementing a first-in-nation Covid vaccine mandate for all private businesses. Starting December 27, 2021, all private-sector workers in NYC will be subject to the City’s new vaccine mandate. The City will issue additional enforcement and reasonable accommodation guidance on December 15th, along with additional resources to support small businesses with implementation. (www.nyc.gov)

3. NYC’s Smartling, a cloud translation platform, has raised $160 million in a growth equity round. The investor was Battery Ventures. Smartling’s platform, which uses AI to translate business and customer communications aided by humans, is used by companies such as Shopify, Survey Monkey and Lyft. 4. Brooklyn’s Goalsetter, a kids and family finance app, has raised $15 million in a Series A funding. Seae Ventures led the round and was joined by Brooklyn Nets’ Kevin Durant, NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Andre Drummond, Fiserv, Mass Mutual, Sterling National Bank, Citizens Financial Group, Cuna Mutual, Astia Fund, Fearless Fund and actors Anthony Anderson (Blackish) and Lance Gross (House of Payne). The app is designed to help combat wealth inequality with savings tools and by promoting “delayed gratification” to help families reach financial goal and limit spending. 5. NYC’s BuzzFeed went public on Monday via a merger with 890 Fifth Avenue Partners, a SPAC. The stock closed down 11% on its first day of trading. BuzzFeed had $321 million in revenue in 2020 and expects to generate $654 million in revenue in 2022. (www.buzzfeed.com) (CNBC)

6. NYC’s JOKR, a 15 minute grocery delivery startup, has raised $260 million in a Series B funding at a $1.2 billion valuation. Investors included Activant Capital, Balderton, NYC’s Greycroft, GGV Capital, G-Squared, HV Capital, Kaszek, Mirae Asset, Monashees, Moving Capital and NYC’s Tiger Global. JOKR now has 200 warehouse hubs in 15 cities, including NYC, Mexico City and Sao Paulo. (www.jokr.com) (TechCrunch)

7. NYC’s Sword Health, a virtual physical therapy platform, has raised $163 million in a Series D funding. The round was led by Sapphire Ventures with participation from Sozo Ventures, Willoughby Capital, General Catalyst. Khosla Ventures, ADQ and Localglobe. Sword’s Digital Therapist product lets members connect with physical therapists and track their progress with wearable motion sensors and a personalized AI-powered exercise program. 8. NYC’s Conductor, an organic marketing technology platform, has raised $150 million in a funding round. The round was led by private equity firm Bregal Sagemount. Conductor was purchased by WeWork in 2018 and recently bought back by management. (www.conductor.com) (GlobeNewswire)

9. NYC’s Life House, a hotel technology platform, has raised $50 million in a Series C funding. KAYAK and Inovia Capital co-led the round and were joined by NYC’s Tiger Global, Derive Ventures, JLL, Trinity Ventures, Sound Ventures and Cooley. Life House, which manages 50 hotels in North America, is now making its hotel management software available to third party hotel operators. (www.life-house.com) (TechCrunch)

10. NYC’s Algofi, a decentralized finance lending market and stablecoin protocol, has raised $2.8 million in a seed funding. NYC’s Union Square Ventures led the round and was joined by Arrington Capital, Pillar VC, Y Combinator, Formulate Ventures and Shine VC. Algofi is building a crypto native bank powered by decentralized finance. (www.algoofi.org) (Finextra)
