1. Peloton is recalling its Tread treadmills over safety concerns. Current owners have been advised to immediately stop using them after reports of dozens of injuries and the death of a child. Peloton is offering a full refund for the $4,295 machine with a 32-inch touch screen that allows runners to work out with the aid of instructors. Peloton’s stock, which is part of the TechNY15 stock index, is down about 15%. (www.onepeloton.com) (New York Times)
2. NYC’s Paxos, a cryptocurrency infrastructure platform, has raised $300 million in a Series D funding. Greenwich’s Oak HC/FT led the round which valued Paxos at $2.4 billion. The company’s platform provides cryptocurrency infrastructure to companies such as PayPal and Venmo allowing their customers to buy, hold and sell crypto asset. (www.paxos.com) (TechCrunch)
3. NYC’s Small Door Veterinary, a concierge veterinary care startup, has raised $20 million in a Series A funding. Toba Capital led the round and was joined by Pentland Group, NYC’s Lerer Hippeau, NYC’s Primary Venture Partners and Brand Foundry. Small Door, which offers around-the-clock telemedicine service and in-clinic features such as separate cat and dog waiting areas, expects to expand from it’s single Upper West Side location by adding an Upper East Side and Brooklyn location by the end of the year. 4. NYC-based venture capital firm LDV Capital has raised $21 million for its third fund. LDV Capital invests in early-stage startiups powered by visual technologies. (www.ldv.co) (Forbes)
5. NYC’s Amplfyher Ventures participated in the $4.5 million seed round raised by Toucan, a language learning startup. Toucan’s Chrome extension scans the text of whatever website a user is reading and translates select words into whichever language they are trying to learn. 6. NYC’s Capsule, a digital pharmacy startup, has raised $300 million in a Series D funding. Durable Capital Partners led the round and was joined by Baillie Gifford, T Rowe Price and Whale Rock. Capsule is building a “one-stop-shop” for digital healthcare where consumers can access Capsule’s digital pharmacy along with services such as telemedicine from within a single app. (www.capsulecares.com) (Fierce Heathcare)
7. Verizon is selling AOL, Yahoo and their associated media properties (such as TechCrunch, Yahoo Finance, etc) to NYC-based private equity firm Apollo Global Management. The sales price is $5 billion with Verizon maintaining a 10% stake after the sale. Verizon bought AOL for $4.4 billion in 2015 and Yahoo in 2017 for $4.5 billion. (CNBC)
8. NYC’s BigID, a data protection platform, has raised $30 million in a private equity round. The investment, made at a $1.25 billion valuation, was made by Advent International. BigID’s platform provides enterprise data protection by finding, tracking and de-risking personal identity data stored across enterprise databases. (www.bigid.com) (PR Newswire)
9. NYC’s Sesame, a direct-pay healthcare marketplace, has raised $24 million in a Series B funding. Investors in the round included Giant Ventures, Industry Ventures, Coefficient Capital, General Catalyst, Entree Capital and Atreides Management. The company’s platform connects self-pay patients to over 1,000 providers offering discounted prices. (www.sesamecare.com) (BusinessWire)
10. NYC’s CoinOut, a customer rewards platform, has been acquired by Chicago’s IRI. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. CoinOut had raised a total of $2.7 million from former Intuit CEO Bill Campbell and Shark Tank’s Robert Herjavec after an October 2020 appearance on the show. (www.coinout.com) (BusinessWire)
